Library's Summer Reading Program Touted As An Overwhelming Success

Officials report that more than 600 students take part in the program.

The Sayville Library’s summer reading program was touted as “an overwhelming success” by library officials, who noted that more than 600 local students participated.

At the Library Board’s monthly meeting on Monday, Alice Lepore, the library’s director, noted that in addition to the large number of youngsters participating in the reading program a number of adults took part in the adult program as well. She did not offer a specific total.

With the summer reading programs now in the rear view mirror, the library staff will be out visiting local schools in an effort to keep kids coming back to the library. Staff members will visit local elementary schools to promote Live-brary for Kids, the digital online library with appropriate links just for kids, Lepore said.

The library director also told trustees about Homework Help, which will be presented on Sept. 26 to help parents and students start the new school year with the knowledge that online help is available up to 11 p.m.

In the weeks ahead, library officials will also work to give those without library cards a sample of what is at their fingertips with a card as Online Self-Registration is now available, Lepore said.

"A 30-day temporary library card alllows a resident to use online resources," she said. "When the resident comes into the library with proof of residency, that temporary card will become a regular library card giving them access to all the materials in the library, easy sign up for programs and the ability to log onto in-house computers, for starters."
