Library Programs Discussed At Board Meeting

Residents express concerns over summer library programs.

The Sayville Library's Board of Trustees discussed LIPA increases as well as summer programs at their recent meeting.

During the public expression portion of the meeting, a group of senior women addressed the board about their senior weight class, which is not being offering during the summer months. “We are concerned because we are hearing rumors that the class is not going to be available in the summer,” said Stephanie Stalter, Sayville resident and class participant. “As seniors, it is very important for us because as we age our muscles start to deteriorate. We saw the new program schedule and there is nothing in there for the summer. We can’t take a vacation from exercise.”

Board president Brendan McCurdy said he understood their concerns but the library has become very popular and many groups are vying for access to the rooms. Library director Alice Lepore added, “The instructor’s prices are also increasing and to pay for her services, it would be about one-third of our budget. The library is about introducing new programs to people, not necessarily ongoing programs.”

Class participant Joan Lengyel added, “This program offers something that keeps our community viable and healthy. We are not asking for a gym; we are asking for a sense of community.” All the participants present said they would gladly pay more for the classes to offset any budgetary concerns.
