Holiday Happenings: Tree Lighting, Santa Visits Flower House

The Bayport-Blue Point community is home to numerous holiday traditions that residents enjoy year after year. Keep track of all the events going on this holiday season with our 2011 Holiday Happenings column.

Where/When: Bayport-Blue Point Library, Nov. 30; 7 p.m.

Why Go: Looking for some quick and delicious dishes to make for the holidays? Not to worry! Chef Charlie will be here to demonstrate a variety of easy recipes to make for family and friends.

  • Bayport Flower Houses Annual Tree Lighting

Where/When: , Dec. 3; 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m.

Why Go: Festivities begin at 3 p.m. when Santa arrives with his elves. Santa Claus will be posing for photos and listening to Christmas wishes.  At 5:30 p.m. Santa and his elves head outdoors to light the Christmas tree. 

Price: Free

  • Dutch Christmas at Meadow Croft

Where/When:Meadow Croft Estate, Dec. 3, 4; noon-4 p.m.

Why Go: Local businesses donated goods and provided decorations for the event at Meadow Croft, which is the 1891 estate of John E. Roosevelt and family. The Roosevelts were Dutch by ancestry. The house will be decorated in a Victorian/Edwardian motif with beautiful wreaths, poinsettias and greenery magnificently reminiscent of a hundred years ago and tied in with a Dutch flavor.  Meadow Croft estate located at 299 Middle Road at Brown’s River on the Bayport-Sayville border.   

Price: $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children ages 4-12.        

  • B-BP Chamber of Commerce Tree Lighting

Where/When: , Dec. 5; 7 p.m.

Why Go: Each year, the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce celebrates the start of the holiday season with an outdoor tree lighting.

Price: Free

Where/When: Bayport-Blue Point Library, Dec. 7; 7 p.m.

Why Go: Join cookbook co-author and baker, Mary Elizabeth and her daughter, chef Nicole Roarke as they demonstrate recipes from the Country Comfort cookbooks. The mother-daugher team will highlight seasonal flavors as well as provide you with chef's tips to plan your holiday menu.

Price: $5

  • Toys for Tots Choreographer's Showcase Benefit

Where/When: , Dec. 9; 8 p.m.

Why Go: , founded by graduate Daniel Longo and his friend Joseph Crescimanno of Farmingville, is slated to host the first Toys for Tots Choreographer's Showcase Benefit. In lieu of a ticket purchase, attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped toy which will be given to a child in need as part of the US Marine Corps' popular holiday charity, Toys for Tots. For added spirit, two US Marines will be present at the 90-minute event.

Price: Donate one (or more) toy.
