Help Report on Hurricane Irene

Residents can contribute to Patch in many ways.

Long Islanders have been spending the past few days preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Irene. Irene, a Category 3 storm, had already barreled through the Caribbean Islands.

She’s expected to hit Long Island somewhere between Saturday night and Sunday morning, bringing with her strong winds, heavy rain and most likely, coastal flooding.

Patch will be providing updates on road closures, power outages and more throughout the storm, although you can help report the action as well. Here’s how:

Send Photos

Much like residents, Bayport-Blue Point Patch Editor Emily Portoghese will be reporting on the storm from the confines of her own home. Photos of the storm would be greatly appreciated. Whether it's down wires, trees or even photos of what residents are doing in wake of the storm, send them in. Email Emily@Patch.com or post them on our Facebook page.

Report Outages

Although we will keep you posted on East Meadow outages via the LIPA storm center outage map, let us know if there are any outages near your home. Whether that's your home's power, street lights going out, we want to hear from you! Either send us a message on Twitter or email Emily@Patch.com.

Shoot Video

Many residents are equipped with a smart phone, whether it's an Android, Blackberry or iPhone. Are you brave enough to shoot video in the storm? Or you can stand under the awning on your front porch! Email videos to Emily@Patch.com.

Share Stories

When the storm strikes, did you get caught in it? What did you do about it? Send in your storm stories to Emily@Patch.com.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.

It's a drive-through bank.

I heard it was a bank some time ago, but I can't imagine which bank would run a construction projectRead More so poorly.
