Getting Schooled in the Ways of a Pirate

Billy Bones brings his lessons to the Sayville Library.

On August 2, the children at Sayville Library received a formal education at Pirate School, a program conducted by pirate Billy Bones. He brought all his pirate expertise to the students, as well as his treasure chest, to show all the attendees how to become a real pirate.

“Put down your Playstations and cell phones and join me on a quest to become cool pirates,” he told the children. “And for the adults, cell phones must be silenced or they will be loaded into a cannon and shot out of the theater.”  He then put on his “iPatchPod” and started the first lesson.

The children began by learning how to talk, sing, and laugh like a pirate. Whenever Billy Bones asked them a question, they needed to shout “Aye Aye.” They also had to stand like a pirate with their hands on their hips, their chins up and give a big pirate laugh.

Billy Bones let the kids know that he doesn’t come from the times of mean and nasty pirates. He is a buccaneer and comes from the “Golden Age of the Buccaneer.” “We are all about courage, honesty and cooperation,” he said.

He led the children in a fun sing-along: “O’ the pirate’s life for me. I’m gonna eat my broccoli. I’m a pirate, I don’t care. I have got clean underwear. Yo, ho, ho and a box of juice.”

The next lesson taught the children that good pirates rely on their eyes, ear and 'noodles.' They don’t need a sword to fight. The kids got to show off their muscles in pirate gym class because “pirates have to be strong so they can carry their boxes of gold,” Billy said.

Billy Bones gave the children a brief history lesson on the Jolly Roger flag and how it got its name. He then started digging in his treasure chest to get a few laughs and show off some tricks.

The adults were even encouraged to get in on the action. “All you adults can bring out your inner swashbucklers as well today,” he said. At the end of the school, the children were sworn in as honorary pirates and each attendee received a diploma.
