Garden Club Shows Off Sayville in Full Bloom

Bringing Broadway musicals to their creations.

With a Broadway musical theme, the Garden Club showed off their talent and creativity at this year's show at the United Methodist Church.

Garden Club president Pat Osarchuk said their goal was to combine “the beauty of flowers with the emotion of music and the excitement of theater.”

Show tunes played throughout the space as you walked from display to display, each category and submission cleverly labeled. There was “Hello, Dolly!” (the dahlia category), “Mama Mia!” and “Into the Woods” among others.

The exhibits are not just installed for their beauty – they are also for educational purposes. Most entries came from residents of Sayville, West Sayville, Oakdale and Bayport that grew their flowers and plants in their own home gardens.

“Entrants must follow Garden Club rules,” noted Edna Limouze who won first place for her display of phragmite with miniature roses.  Ann Severson won first place in the “Puttin’ on the Ritz” category for her umbrella pine with gerbera and hosta. Ann noted, “The judges put constructive criticism on the back of the submission cards – it’s a learning experience.”

Sayville resident Sharon Way-Howard was on hand, painting in watercolors. She joined the Garden Club about a year ago and this was her first time having an educational and floral display. “I was a nervous wreck doing floral because I’d never done it before. But painting is design, so they are kind of similar in that respect.”

The Sayville Garden Club meets at noon on the third Monday of each month at the Sayville United Methodist Church.
