Feb. 2: Sophomore Shadow Day and Simon the Therapy Dog Canceled

Is winter here to stay? According to legend, Feb. 2 is the day we find out how much longer we must endure the winter, and if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring. Find out after 7:25 a.m. today if our local ground hog, Holtsville Hal, saw his shadow. Town of Brookhaven's Annual Ground Hog Day Ceremony takes place Wednesday at the Brookhaven Ecology Site on Buckley Road in Holtsville.

There is a two-hour delay Wednesday at Bayport-Blue Point Public Schools: due to the delay/weather, Shadow Day for sophomore has been postponed.

Another member of the animal kingdom may brighten your day; meet Simon the therapy dog at the library this afternoon and learn how he enriches the lives of those he works with. (now canceled)

1. Canceled: Sophomores at  will have a front row seat to "the real world" at Shadow Day. Organized by the Bayport-Blue Point School-to-Business Partnership, the event has students "shadow" employees at local businesses for the entire school day. A student interested in journalism will shadow Patch editor Emily Portoghese to get a feel of what a local editor for Patch.com does during their work day. 2. Meet Simon the therapy dog at at 4 p.m. Wednesday. This Goldendoodle is gentle and friendly, nuzzling and cuddling patients of all ages. His owner, Betty Schram, will visit to explain what Simon does and how your dog may be trained to do volunteer work at hospitals, rehab centers and assisted living facilities. Children over 10 are welcome to attend with their parent(s). All children 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required either online, by phone or in-person.

3. The Zoning Board of the Town of Brookhaven will host their weekly meeting at 2 p.m. at Town Hall, 1 Independence Hl, Farmingville.

4. Karaoke Night happens every Wednesday at 9 p.m. Sage Cafe in Blue Point.

5. Tonight Cavanaugh's offers their "Steak Out Specials" beginning at 5 p.m. This special is offered in house only, no special price on takeout orders.

*Town of Islip's Domestic Violence workshop scheduled for Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. has been canceled.
