Changed by 9/11: Joy Borrero

A Bayport resident shares her experience of 9/11, and how the tragedy changed her.

Suffolk County Community College nursing teacher Joy Borrero remembers standing confused in her kitchen the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, moments after the Twin Towers were hit.

“I was home that day and I had no idea what was happening,” Borrero said. “I spoke to my husband and he said ‘you didn’t hear what happened?’ so I put the TV on and it was just unreal.”

Like many New Yorkers, Borrero was afraid to head into Manhattan at first, but the national unity that was evident post-attacks and the bravery of others inspired her to go back, she said.

“I love Manhattan," Borrero said. "Everyone was so resilient and just stuck together through all of that."
