Board of Education Recognizes Academic Achievement

Two students presented with National Merit Scholarship certificates at Nov. 2 meeting.

students Andy Cheng and Brandon O'Brien were both presented National Merit Scholarship certificates by high school principal Dr. Timothy Hearney at the Nov. 2 meeting of the district's Board of Education.

The principal emphasized how impressed he was with the students accomplishments, "I'd like to acknowledge these students for their achievements and commend them for their PSAT scores, which ranked in the top 5 percent of the nation," he said.

During the new business discussion, board members Anthony Donatelli and Diane D'Angelo spoke about their recent meeting with the New York State School Boards Association meeting. The overall theme of the meeting, they said, was the group's positivity with regard to the future. Though they said there are plenty of challenges ahead, everyone was optimistic.

"The fiscal side looks very negative but there are a lot of reasons to be positive," D'Angelo said. She attended a bullying presentation and made note that the district is revising its bullying program.

The next Bayport-Blue Point School District Board of Education workshop meeting will take place Nov. 16 in the high school cafeteria at 8 p.m.
