Apple Fest Welcomes in the Harvest

Thousands attend the kickoff to the new season in Sayville.

Cars were parked 2-deep along Montauk Highway and attendees left with smiles on their faces carrying mums and decorative signs to put in their gardens at last weekend's at the Islip Grange.

The offered bags of apples. Hand painted and handmade wares abounded, including jewelry, doll clothing, wine glasses, baby blankets and dried floral arrangements.

Young and old milled about, many with their dogs. Families were everywhere. Mom Michele towing kids Brady and Sydney in their Radio Flyer wagon said, “My sister-in-law lives here in Sayville. We’re in Medford, and we come every year.”

Sayville resident Dawn Sullivan and her business partner Sue, had a booth at the fair. They sell organic buckwheat pillows. It was their first time displaying at AppleFest. “We love it! We have done the Seafood Festival and other local fairs and we enjoy doing them, too. We’re going to come back to AppleFest every year," she said.

There was face painting, a petting zoo, pony rides, crafts and all types of food including  seafood, roasted corn on the cob, Italian and Greek treats, fried Oreos and, of course, apples. Many happy participants line danced to country music: “No Shoes. No Shirt. No Problem” while others viewed the exhibits at The Town Museum which was open to visitors.

Among the booths filled with all kinds of treats were tents representing important causes, among them the Greyhound Rescue booth. Several of the animals were present demonstrating firsthand their beauty and worth.

A special attraction this year was which offered free holiday photo portrait sittings. If any photographs are subsequently ordered, all proceeds will go to Sayville High School scholarships and other projects sponsored by the Pilot Club of Sayville. Owner of Spelman, Suzanne Piard, offers her photography services to many worthy causes including covering the 250th anniversary celebrations for the town of Sayville.
