Advisory on Swimming at Corey, Sayville Marina Beaches

County health department issues alert given rainfall, stormwater discharge issue.

Suffolk County Department of Health Services issued an advisory today against swimming at two bay beaches given the heavy rainfall taking place and the issue of storm water discharge and limited tidal flushing.

The agency cites the potential that bacterial numbers may exceed state standards.

The department recommends that bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles (at least a 24 hour period) after the cessation of rainfall.

Unless sampling done by the department finds elevated bacterial numbers persisting beyond the 24-hr period, this advisory will be rescinded as of 7 p.m. on Thursday.
