A 1910 Christmas at Meadow Croft was held recently at the former estate of John E. Roosevelt, a cousin and legal advisor to former United States President Theodore Roosevelt.
The theme for this year's Bayport Heritage Association-sponsored event allowed those who visited the estate in early December to travel back 100 years in history. According to local historian Gene Horton, the event gets better every year.
To showcase the history of the estate, the building was decorated in a Victorian/Edwardian style, each room illustrating life during that era. Floral arrangements brightened the Roosevelt summer house, and were adorned with wreaths, greenery and poinsettias.
One of the focal points of Christmas at Meadow Croft was the original Roosevelt grand piano in the parlor, which was played each hour by rotating pianists. The sound of the music could be heard throughout the estate.
The transportation back to 1910 continued upstairs, where electric trains, antique dolls, teddy bears, vintage clothing and other period toys and decorations were on display. St. Nick was also on hand to check his list of those who had been naughty or nice.
