#97 – Take a Boat Ride

LIMM offers excursions starting next month on its restored 1888 Oyster Sloop.

Back in May 2010, the Long Island Maritime Museum (LIMM) and its staff completed the restoration of an 1888 Oyster Sloop named Priscilla. Priscilla has become a shining example of all the museum has to offer. The vessel began taking passengers out on the Great South Bay last May.

The 122-year-old ship has undergone continuous maintenance and repairs throughout her history, including a major restoration in 2002 and 2003. She was owned by several oystermen from New York and Connecticut before being donated to the museum in 1976.

By offering interactive public sailings, Priscilla has become a part of the community she serves and can now be shared with many. Owned and operated by the LIMM, Priscilla acts as an ambassador through its diverse programs scheduled at many ports throughout the season. Passengers will be given an opportunity to help the crew navigate on the Great South Bay, learn about the ship’s history and the local environment or merely sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular view, according to the museum.
