Cruisin' For St. Jude's Children's Hospital

Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce sponsors second-annual event.

The sun and the cars were out as the parking lot at the Islip Grange filled with participants and attendees for the Second Annual Cruisin’ for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital Classic Car Show.

Skip Pope, coordinator of the event, said, “The Bayport-Blue Point Chamber is involved in a number of causes, but when they found out what this St. Jude’s event was all about, everyone jumped on board.”

Founded in 1962 by Danny Thomas, St. Jude’s is a world-renowned hospital focused on treating and curing catastrophic pediatric diseases. Over the years, it has made tremendous in-roads in its research. By offering templates for communities to follow to host such events, it enables fundraising dollars to grow and further help its mission.

With more than 55 entries, the classic and antique cars were judged and awarded trophies in three categories – Custom, Nostalgic and Best in Show. John Fontana of Bayport took home the trophy for Best in Show for the second consecutive year with his perfectly restored 1957 Chevrolet convertible.

Face painting and snacks were also available with all net proceeds going to St. Jude’s Hospital and Research Center. Contributions were received from car owners, show visitors and business owners who purchased support signs.

Pope said the event raised more than $3,000 which, given the tough economic times we are in, says a lot for the community. ”It couldn’t have happened without the support of the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce and all of the volunteers who sacrificed the last few weeks in both time and money," Pope added.
