2010 Blizzard Hits Bayport-Blue Point

Snow continues to fall in the area and shows no signs of stopping.

A blizzard warning remains in effect in Bayport-Blue Point with heavy snow and strong winds in the area. According to weather.com, there is a considerable amount of blowing and drifting of snow in the area with zero visibility possible at times.

With accumulations that could reach over 15 inches, Bayport-Blue Point will need to dig out of this storm tonight and tomorrow morning.

Mary Neimeth from  said that snowblowers sold out early Sunday morning. "We are prepared for the storm with pallets of ice melt and plenty of snow shovels, snow brushes, gloves, windshield washer fluid and everything else you need to dig out," said Neimeth. "We also have pallets of bird seed for all our feathered friends."

During the height of the storm tonight, north winds could increase to 25 to 40 mph with gusts of 45 to 60 mph.

Town of Islip Supervisor Phil Nolan is asking local residents to stay home and keep cars off local streets to allow snow removal crews to clear the snow.

Nolan said there will be about 300 snow removal crews working Sunday and Monday across the town, which is responsible for clearing about 1,100 miles of roadway.

The LIRR is taking all measures to keep train service operating throughout the system. But to ensure customer and employee safety, service may be temporarily suspended this evening if snow accumulations reach 10 to 13 inches, as predicted. These suspensions will permit snow removal equipment to operate so safe reliable service can be restored.

At Long Island Islip MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, spokeswoman Catherine Green said that Southwest Airlines and US Airways canceled all flights after 3 p.m. The airport is planning to resume normal operations Monday at approximately noon. It is suggested that travelers with flights scheduled to or from MacArthur Airport call their carriers.
