What Does Your Summer Job Search Look Like?

Not sure how to conduct your job search during the Summer? Is anyone even hiring throughout the summer? Here are some tips to maintain momentum in your job search throughout the summer months!

Are you dipping your toes in the water or diving in with total confidence making a noticeable splash?

This is the time to gain an edge in this competitive job market!  Did you know that  July, August and September has consistently accounted for about 25% of annual hires for the last 10 years -- the majority of that occurs in July and August according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics!

Historically, people slow down their job search during these months because they believe "no one is hiring, everyone is on vacation".  Not true!  In fact, many hiring managers are delaying or minimizing vacations in an effort to maintain the business and increase sales.

This creates a hugh opportunity for the serious job seeker to reach out to hiring managers, recruiters and decision makers as this is a slower time at work providing more time to conduct that informational interview you're seeking!

Take the time to get to know others and take advantage of social events like family barbeques, beach outings, sporting events, community gatherings, etc.  Volunteer to help out at local seasonal events too.

But be cautious in your approach - you should be able to let others know who you are and what your looking for in about 15 seconds. Know what you want others to know about you! Practice the 80/20 rule -- you talk 20% of the time and listen carefully 80% of the time!

Carry "contact cards" (like business cards) to pass along to new contacts and ask to follow up in a few days.  Face to face networking is always best!

So while decision makers may take a little longer in the summer to move through the hiring process, they are certainly hiring! Happy diving!!
