Broadway in Bloom

Four Star performance by the Sayville Garden Club!

The rain on Friday didn’t deter members or visitors from enjoying the flower show at the Sayville Methodist Church. Saturday brought sunshine, more visitors, and an outdoor plant sale. As a new member, and never having been to a flower show before, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I admit I was a little intimidated listening to the preparations, rules, etc. but now - I’m a lot impressed!! Between preparation, set-up and the curtain going up, I saw beautiful displays, tables of single flowers, house plants, grasses and herbs all come together in a very interesting and creative tribute to some of our Broadway favorites.

Divisions had titles like Broadway Melodies and Razzle Dazzle. There were Design entries featuring rounds, mirrors, miniature vases and musical instruments. The Horticulture entries included hardy specimens that made it through the hurricane, only to shine in their glass containers for all to enjoy!  There were plants we see in our own gardens and some that will inspire us for “next year."

Each entry was scored and then awards were given according to their class and placement. Top honors of blue ribbons, Design Awards, Judges Choice and Merit went to the most deserving members. Two special awards were given for special exhibits set up by Betty Whitehouse (The Underground Rivers of Sayville) and Sharon Way-Howard (Ever-blooming: the Beauty of Botanical Art).

For me, it was an eye-opening inspiration!  Add it to your “to do list” the next time. Better yet, join us on the third Monday of the month, noon at the Sayville Methodist Church and see what we are about. You’ll be glad you did.
