WSCS Takes Stand Against Common Core

West Sayville Christian School Position Statement on the Common Core Standards Initiative

The West Sayville Christian School Administration and Board of Directors continually assess the academic and spiritual “health” of our student body to ensure our students are taught within the framework of our adopted Mission Statement:
West Sayville Christian School exists to assist Christian families by providing a Christ-centered, Bible-based, academically strong education that encourages each child to come to a saving Knowledge of Jesus Christ. We believe that this will equip and inspire them by laying a solid foundation for living a life of obedience to God and service to others.
As Christian educators, we seek to impart into our students non-negotiable Christian values that will transform and equip them to answer God’s calling. West Sayville Christian School strives to integrate a biblical worldview in all curricula while providing a rigorous academic program. Therefore, we annually review curriculum and standardized testing.
West Sayville Christian School has been administering New York State Standardized Tests for many years and analyzing the results for continual improvement in our academic program. However, since the Common Core has been instituted, we feel the content of the exams and materials are leaning towards a humanistic worldview and contrary to our Christian values.
In order to continue achieving our goals and fulfilling our mission statement, West Sayville Christian School has opted to discontinue administering NYS Assessment Tests and the use of any Common Core related materials beginning with the 2014/15 school year.
