Who's Who of Sayville

Patch catches up with local attorney Deidre Byrne.

What is your Sayville connection?

I don’t think I have just one connection to Sayville. One of the many reasons we chose Sayville more than two decades ago as our hometown was for the schools. Our children have derived enormous benefits from the challenging academic programs and especially the music program. Both of my children have been able to develop their musical abilities in large part because of the encouragement they received through the schools. As our children have grown older, we have become connected to several different organizations within the school community. Because the organizations serve multiple grades of children, I can stay in touch with the younger families coming up and keep abreast of those issues which are important to them.

But I am also connected to Sayville through my church, . Through my church I am connected to a smaller, older community; one with deep historic roots in this town. I love that sense of . The church has provided a nurturing community for our whole family. At the same time, as my church reaches out, I become connected to a wider community. That connection to a wider Sayville community with many different needs means that I (hopefully) never lose sight of the growing changing community around me. Through my church I am inspired to serve my community.

What do you love most about Sayville?

What I love most about Sayville is that it reminds me of the town in which I grew up. My childhood was spent mostly in Malverne, a very small town in Nassau County. There my father was a volunteer fireman and a local businessman. His association with the fire department formed the core of my parents’ social life. We always felt we were part of a caring community. In coming to Sayville, I felt like I was coming home. Sayville has all the things I miss about the town in which I grew up: a charming and vibrant Main Street lined with shops, a volunteer fire department, a volunteer ambulance corps, a beautiful library, many different churches and synagogues, lovely homes, tree lined streets…and people who love their town and take their community seriously. I love that I have had so many opportunities to be involved in the different aspects of town life. In doing so, I have made wonderful friends, many of whom have become my extended family.

What makes your business unique in Sayville?

Being an attorney is a second career for me. For many years I was a middle school teacher in western Suffolk County. After serving the needs of children for so long, I wanted to turn my attention and energy to helping a wider section of our society. Having an office on Main Street is a dream come true for me. My practice is devoted to those things which matter most to the families of Sayville: Real Estate, Education, Special Needs, Wills and Probate matters, and Elder Law. My practice is increasingly confronted with matters pertaining to the elderly, the fastest growing segment of our society. I am a sole practitioner whose main goal is to provide my clients with personal attention as befits a small town attorney. In an era where bigger is better, I want to be able to serve my clients with the same care and attention I would give to members of my own family.

In 10 years Sayville will be…

In 10 years Sayville will continue to be a growing, vibrant and caring community; a place where families put down their roots and grow. Sayville will always be my hometown.
