Top Business Stories of 2010

Sayville Patch looks back at the business stories that made headlines in 2010.

Sayville, like most communities, saw businesses close their doors due in large part to the struggling economy. 2010 also featured some grand openings and re-openings and residents welcomed some news businesses to town as well. Here is a look back at some of the business stories from this year.

Just before Sayville Patch launched, closed after more than 30 years in business. Pharmacist Ed Hilinski said at the time that working with the insurance companies made it difficult for him to stay open. Although Thornhills closed, Hilinski started working at Sayville's .

After a little less than a year in business, South Main Street's restaurant closed its doors in late August.

The restaurant, which opened in November of 2009, was housed in the site formerly known as Collins & Main, one of Sayville's standby restaurants. The building owners took over the space and opened CU29 but it wasn't generating enough profits.

The location did not remain vacant for long as Italian Restaurant now occupies the space. With locations in Woodbury, Smithtown, Massapequa, Seaford and now Sayville, Butera's is hoping to have much success with its casual, neighborhood-style dining

Another Main Street causality is . Mary Novotny took over the store four years ago and recently made the tough decision to close the store. "I had to look at the economy and everything that is going on. And I also now have to compete with stores on the Internet. I just felt like it was a losing proposition but I didn't give up without a fight," said Novotny. The liquidation sale is going on now with items marked down from 25 percent and more. The store will remain open until the end of January.

West Sayville welcomed some new establishments to Main Street. , located in the former space of the Armadillo Grille, opened its doors on West Main Street. Seafood is the featured item at Bullfish but there are a few non-seafood items for land lovers, such as steak, roasted chicken and a veal porterhouse. The concept of the restaurant is healthy, fresh cuisine.

Another addition to Main Street in West Sayville this year was , which opened over the summer and features the great items that Erin Nicosia had at the farmers market in town. The store features handmade, artisanal cheeses from all over the country and all of the foods that go with it, like fresh baked breads, preserves, charcuterie and more

This year also featured the grand opening of the and the closing of Lealand Eve Boutique and Kayla's Kards. And although not new in town, the and both moved to Main Street in Sayville to more predominant locations.
