Reader Feedback On Vacancies in Blue Point & Sayville

Find out what your neighbors want to see move into vacant lots and storefronts.

In the past few weeks Patch has highlighted several vacant business locations, asking readers what they’d like to see and not see move into the locations.

Two were in Blue Point, within a half a mile of each other along Montauk Highway, and the third is the parking lot that abuts the Carvel shopping center in downtown Sayville.

The first Blue Point location is a former gas station convenience business on the north side of Montauk Highway, west of Blue Point Avenue. It was the original location of the Sphinx that is now housed at Fontana’s concrete business in Bayport and there is still marshland to the east of the building and parking lot.

Readers would love to see a Trader Joe’s store move into the location, given the parking and the fact there are nearby gas stations and plenty of fast food establishments on the highway.

The runner-up choice is a bar or restaurant.

Down the road east a bit from the vacant gas station, is a stand-alone small white building for rent, just steps from the intersection of Blue Point Avenue and Montauk Highway.

The one thing residents don’t want to move in is yet another bank, but they’d welcome a cupcake emporium. Close second is a deli or a professional services use.

Here’s the final vote tally breakdown:

A shoe repair shop 5 (12%)

A small bank 0 (0%)

A professional services business 8 (19%)

Over in Sayville, as you drive toward downtown’s four corners, you pass a parking lot with a large tree on the right hand side. Patch has been told the property has long been leased to the town for a $1 for public use such as parking. While we track down and confirm that claim, here’s a look at what residents hope would move into that paved location.

First off, as one passionate reader stated, the tree should be saved somehow no matter what moves in. Secondly, no one wants a large sandbox filling the site or even a shopping locker business.

A good majority would like it to be used as park commemorating Sayville and featuring a big fountain.

Here are the official results:

A Mister Softie truck   7 (25%)

A huge lemonade and ice tea stand  2 (7%)

Make it into a huge sandbox  0 (0%)

Memorial park with a big fountain   18 (66%)

Mini storage lockers shoppers can use during the day   0 (0%)
