No. 78 - The Willow Project

Local program incorporates mind, body, spirit to guide those who have received a breast cancer diagnosis through difficult times.

in Bayport has initiated an innovative program for breast cancer patients in active treatment or survivorship called The Willow Project.

It's an integrative approach towards healing with movement, mediation and discussion.  Dr. Antoinette Forster and Susan Modugno combined these three components to create a program for moving forward with life after a cancer diagnosis.

Modugno, the founder and director of Sangha Pilates, has been specially trained by Pink Ribbon to do pilates with breast cancer patients. Forster has been managing psychosocial issues of cancer patients for the past 30 years as a nurse practitioner.

A diagnosis of cancer comes with anxiety and fear from the patient, but also from their spouses, children and friends.

“I realized we needed to create a program that supports moving forward. These women are dealing with depression and isolation behind the scenes," Modugno said. "After cancer people interact with them differently."

There is no other program around that uses mediation, discussion and pilates to deals with these issues.
