Gas Delivery at Hess Ignites Long Line of Cars in Bayport

The arrival of a fuel truck caught attention quickly as the line soon wrapped several blocks before gas was even pumped into station.

There are dozens of motorists in Bayport sitting in line to get gas at Hess about 3 p.m. shortly after a fuel delivery truck arrived at the Montauk Highway station. Police were on hand to manage traffic and the line that quickly snaked down the highway, south along McConnell Avenue and then west on Railroad Avenue.

Bad choice of words for the headline...

If everyone would just be level headed about the gas situation there wouldn't be miles of cars waiting as if we will never have gasoline again.....and at some stations cars are just waiting in line with no one in them! Really?? I don't ever remember a day when EVERYONE NEEDED gas at the same time! Totally ridiculous!

Also, "quick" should be "quickly," as it is modifying the verb "caught," and is therefore being used as an adverb in this sentence.

The reason some of us are urgently needing gas is because we still have no power and without gas we can't run our generators to heat or turn a light on at night! I have a baby at home and 35 degrees last night with no heat was pretty cold for us.

I work for the banks and they are assessing damge for FEMA relief so I need gas to get all over long island and NYC.
Dana Rodriguez November 03, 2012 at 09:46 PM
And I was on the line and I was done in an hour. That was not bad, good job Hess for making the wait quick and efficient.

did you get gas?
Ann Marie November 03, 2012 at 09:50 PM
Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. I can't say I agree in whole with your statement that people are not being level headed. People are trying to keep generators going so their families are somewhat comfortable and people are expected to get to work, so you are going to find those who will wait on those atrocious lines so they can gas their vehicles to get back and forth. It's sad that this happened and that some folks are resorting to violence at the pumps because they are aggravated with the situation, so those people in my opinion aren't being level headed. It may seem ridiculous to you, and that is your opinion which is ok, but to many others this is a terrible time for them. Thankfully this will be temporary.

Dcap my family was no able to get gas at station. We ended up siphoning out I a friends boat to fuel our generator for the night.
dcap November 03, 2012 at 10:50 PM
ok . I have some gas on reserve, I am willing to help if you need it.
Rich November 03, 2012 at 10:51 PM
When do we see when gas will be delivered
Rich November 03, 2012 at 10:55 PM
Me too. If you need some I will siphon out of vehicle for that child...this is bad... They need to come up with a better way
Michelle November 03, 2012 at 11:30 PM
Thank you both so much. Hopefully we can get more tomorrow. Taking it one day at a time. If we need I will let you know. Thanks so much!

I couldn't agree more, Deb.

Waited 50 minutes at 6:30. Filled tank on Subaru and 5 gal can. Hess attendants did fantastic job,as did SCPD.. Felt a little nostalgic for the old gsas crisis days of the '70s

I waited at two other stations for several hours each for generator gas, walk up. Hess had their operation streamlined with the help of Suff & NYState police. All of the Hess people were working to direct cars - excellent for a bad situation!
Donna Galan November 04, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Michelle - I hope you get power quickly, I lived through that with a six month old in Hurricaine Gloria in 1985 and I know how awful that was....and it wasn't freezing then. My comment isn't for people who need gas for generators....they should be in the front of the line!

Is there any gas left?
Ann Marie November 04, 2012 at 06:55 PM
Unfortunately no, I passed it this morning at 10:30 and there was a sign that said they only had diesel.
