Curves Is Keeping It Hot

The ladies of Curves are warming up with the Biggest Loser contest.

This winter has been full of snow and coldness, but the women of in Sayville have been warm and sweating while working out in the Biggest Loser Competition.

Now in the middle of week three of the Biggest Loser, so far 23 ½ pounds have been shed by the hard working healthy women at Curves. Anna Duggan, whose progress is being followed by Sayville Patch, knows it is difficult to start a new routine.

Right when the Biggest Loser began she had a house full of company from Europe.  So that meant lots of sightseeing, eating on the run and late night restaurant dinners. “I just could not make it to Curves. Running around with my company was exercise enough. I tried to make healthy choices at dinner, but it was hard and stressful,” she said.  To get back on track for the competition Duggan has signed up for the Curves Zumba classes and is excited to burn off the extra calories.

The Zumba classes are something new that Curves owner Sharon Boyle added to her gym. She said that she is committed to always trying something new to keep her member’s workout fresh and fun. Kathy Fallon teaches the Curves Zumba classes – classes are on Tuesdays at 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 8:15 a.m. and 7:15 p.m.  The hour long Zumba class starts at 6  p.m. on Fridays.

The other Biggest Loser competitor that Sayville Patch is following is Susan Fish from West Sayville. Fish was in the contest and lost 13 pounds and she wants to continue losing with a total weight loss goal of 30 pounds. “I know that will not happen in the 10 weeks of this contest. I love the competition because it makes me accountable every week,”  she said.

In week three, Fish so far has only lost one pound, but not discouraged she said, “I know I hit a plateau and I am added different thing to my workout, like doing the Curves Zumba on the circuit and coming to Curves three to four times a week.” Of course Fish is making healthy food choices and drinking a lot of water. Her greatest temptation is chips and she combats this craving by snacking on raw string beans dipped in her favorite low fat dressing. It gives her the crunch of eating chips – only healthier.

Another feature of Curves that helps Fish to optimize her workouts – Curves Smart, “It pushes me to do a little bit more on each machine.” she said.  Curves Smart is an added component to the circuit machines that is programmed to each member’s workout, like a personal trainer. During a Curves Smart workout, the exercise equipment will tell the user to work harder or to slow down according to their own information. At the end Curves Smart give detailed feedback on the exercise session.

Curves still has the twice a week walking club at Sun-Vet Mall until the snow melts.  They meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 - 7 p.m.

Sharon Boyle offers some tips to those looking to lose some weight:

  • Try freezing fruit, like grapes or bananas. For only an extra 20 calories per tablespoons dip the frozen fruit into Lite Cool Whip.
  • Sugar free and fat free pudding comes in many delicious flavors and for a boost of calcium use skim milk.
  • Kettle corn is hot, crunchy and sweet. It is also a good source of whole grain and high in fiber.
  • Hot chocolate is 55 calories for one serving of the no-sugar hot beverage.  Add a few drops of mint extract to spice it up.
