Behind the Counter: Unique Antique Items That Surpass Traditional Treasure

Time Tunnel Antiques has just that--antiques but it's also home to some very extraordinary collectables.

Sayville's Time Tunnel Antique store has everything most shoppers are interested in: vintage jewelry, new jewelry, household antiques, furniture and of traditional collectables like coins and depression glass and china. Owners Peter Setzer and Kevin Farrell are always bringing in new items so it's a great place to stop in at least once a week.

But within the shelves and, in some cases, tucked away and protected, are quite a few rare and historic items including a 1936 Olympics scrap book featuring Jessie Owens from the Munich games, an autograph of Jack Ruby on a check, the signature of Andy Warhol on a poster and even a fascinating book depicting Mussolini's grand plan for a new empire. There's even a preserved tarantula under glass for sale.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
