8 Shopping Days Left: Handcrafted Mittens & One-of-a-Kind Jewelry

Bayport market Rita's Real Foods offers more than healthy eating options at holiday time.

Everyone in town knows hungry patrons can get great soup and fresh-made food at Rita's Real Foods, on Middle Road in Bayport.

But did you know that at this time of year you can get hand-crafted gorgeous mittens and one-of-a-kind jewelry?

Both make for great gifts at the holidays, as does some of the goodies that line the shelves within the quaint market storefront

Owner Rita Palma makes the mittens which boast antique buttons her mother collected. She will custom-make the mittens to match a favorite sweater or coat, just bring in what needs to be matched. The materials are all up-cycled. The jewelry, which is also for sale at the Roast in Patchogue on Saturdays, is the creative design of Beth Kraemer.

The gift items are only available up until the last day of operation, which will be Christmas Eve when the shop closes at 2 p.m. The store re-opens in March.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.

It's a drive-through bank.

I heard it was a bank some time ago, but I can't imagine which bank would run a construction projectRead More so poorly.
