UPDATED: B-BP Hires Long Beach Administrator as New HS Principal

Additional information regarding compensation was added to this story at 3:12 p.m.

The Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education is expected to appoint a new high school principal, current Long Beach High School Principal Dr. Gaurav Passi, at Tuesday night’s meeting.

According to B-BP district officials Passi will be paid a salary of $169,000 and have the current benefits provided to other district administrators.

Passi will replace current B-BP high school principal Dr. Timothy Hearney who was recently appointed as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction and who will take on that role July 1.

Hearney's compensation as of July 1, as principal, would have been $175,000. He will earn $188,000 annually for the first two years of his new job contract.

Passi told Patch that he made the job move for several reasons.

"I enjoyed working with Dr. Butera at Long Beach so that was a factor but most important is the investment the Bayport-Blue Point community has made toward education," Passi told Patch in a phone call.
"What the district is doing is in line with my philosophy of preparing students for the next phase of their life, career and college," he said. "I hope to build off the foundation put in place by Dr. Hearney," he added.

According to the Long Beach Herald, Passi was hired by Long Beach as principal in June, 2010 to replace retiring Principal Nick Restivo. Passi's career includes two years as an assistant principal in Northport High School and another two as an administrative dean at Locust Valley High School. Prior to Locust Valley the Levittown resident taught social studies at Farmingdale High.

According to the Herald, Bayport-Blue Point Superintendent Dr. Vincent Butera, who served as assistant superintendent at Long Beach prior to his appointment in October, 2012, was involved in hiring Passi. Butera officially started in his role December 1, 2012.

The district's search for a new principal involved one job advertisement in the New York Times which drew 15 resumes, according to B-BP officials. Of that pool five candidates were invited for interviews.
