Bayport Housing Project on Planning Board Agenda

A proposal to build 56 senior apartments on a lot off McConnell Avenue in Bayport will be the topic of a public hearing by the Islip Town Planning Board on July 11.

The project isn’t new as developer Jim Tsunis has had discussions in the past year with town planners about building a housing development on that lot, as well as a connecting lot, the site of the former Sayville Plumbing parcel off Montauk Highway.

Since then, however, the property owner made a deal for the plumbing lot with another buyer who is hoping to build a boat sales and repair shop at that location. That proposal is still under review and the planning board is expected to make a recommendation by mid summer, according to a town official.

The revised Tsunis proposal features a bit of a twist off the initial plans, which had access options off Montauk and McConnell.

The new proposal cites traffic ingress and egress off of Oakwood Avenue via a vacant lot for sale that is adjacent to the railroad tracks.

The Bayport Civic Association states it has not been officially apprised of the revised project or contacted by Tsunis on the proposal.

Tsunis had not yet returned a phone call from Patch on the project by press time.
