Cool off your computer!

I was sitting with my laptop computer on my lap working on a project when I accidentally spilled a very full and very cold glass of ice water directly into the computer keyboard.   While this tall cool glass of water would help me cool off, it was not so pleasant for my laptop!

What would you do in this situation?  I reacted cooly and quickly unplugged her from the wall outlet and immediately afterwards removed the battery.  Next I disassembled about as much as I dared from the main part of the computer; the hinge assembly, the keyboard, the hard drive, etc... and I laid the parts on a towel.  Next I put them all in front of the air conditioner and left it like that for about a day.  I also made sure that there was no pooled water or any residue left inside the machine.

About a day later I re-assembled it, put the battery back in, plugged it in (and gulp), and she started right back up good as new.

The lesson to be learned is that by removing all sources of power, as quickly as you can, can reduce the amount of damage your computer will sustain in a big spill situation like I had.

I hope you all are enjoying your summer!
