Can't see the USB drive?

I plugged in my USB drive today into a computer. A dialogue popped up on the bottom right of the screen telling me that the drive was ready to use. I went into Windows Explorer and the drive was not there. Sometimes the USB drive is not mounted properly. It could be for a variety of reasons but there is an easy fix. First hit the start button and type in cmd which brings up the old friendly DOS C: prompt. Next type in diskpart. C now looks like this DISKPART. Next type in: list volume. This should show you all of your drives. Note the drive with the USB drive. We want to select that drive by typing: select volume = Next select the letter you want for the volume by typing the command: assign letter = Choose a letter that you know will not have a conflict, for example Q or P. Now you should be able to access your USB drive via Windows Explorer. You can have lots of fun with diskpart by assigning certain folders to a drive letter. But be advised that you can permanently mess up your computer if you don't use diskpart correctly, so use with care.
