Open Letter to Sound Beach Bus Riders

Do you want better bus service?

The Sound Beach Civic Association is working with Legislator Sarah Anker's office to get better bus service through Sound Beach and we need input from bus riders about what needs to be done to accomplish this.

We are concentrating on better coordination between the 5A, which runs several times a day through Sound Beach, and connecting lines in Port Jefferson. In addition we are asking for the 5A to go through earlier westbound in the morning and later eastbound at night.

Bus service through our hamlet dates from when Sound Beach was a summer community. This is no longer the case. We are now a middle-class working community and we need better bus service.

So we need more bus riders to weigh in. Please send your comments to the Sound Beach Civic Association, PO Box 295, Sound Beach, NY 11789. We are putting all comments together and submitting them to Legislator Anker. The more letters we get, the more likely they will pay attention to us.

I've never seen a bus with more than 3 or 4 passengers on board out here. It's a huge waste of taxpayers money to run these mostly empty buses. Every one of these mostly empty buses are a tax burden on our community (the bus company's is certainly running on a deficit) so why would we want to increase these services as it will only increase our tax burden. If the buses were making money for the County I could understand increasing bus service but when they are operating at a loss (a liability for taxpayers) in what world would we want them to operate at a greater loss?

All money spent on our public transportation comes heavily subsidized by our taxes. It doesn't miraculously appear!

Sdyank, part of the reason more people don't use the buses is because they are not well coordinated with other lines. For example, a bus that comes from the mall gets to to Port Jefferson after the bus that goes to Sound Beach has already departed. This is just one example. This is a problem throughout the system. And I've gotten comments from people about this. This is the main thing we wnat--better coordination. And this wouldn't cost any more money. I've also heard from people that would use the bus to go to the train station for work but from Sound Beach there isn't one that gets them there early enough or brings them home late enough. One man says that he often has to take a cab home because his family only has one car and he doesn't always have use of it. I do agree with you that if they don't fix these problems it is a waste of money. But I don't agree with you that they shouldn't fix these problems.

What's a total waste of taxpayer money and benefits only a small portion of the population is the over $14 million proposed on the Rails to Trails project. But that will benefit those that have so that will probably happen while better bus service will not! How many people do you think will use these trails?

DriscollP, chastizing Engineer will solve nothing!! Listening and HEARING each others voices WILL solve problems. I believe a few buses in the morning and a few in the evening to the Port Jefferson train station is a great idea. I would like to see these buses coordinated with the train schedule so the system has a purpose. Busing through Sound Beach the rest of the time currently has no purpose, ie. few ridership and cost to the taxpayers with little or no benefit. Taking the busing issue a step further, county legislators need to revamp the WHOLE busing system to make it more efficient and cost productive. Right now as the system stands,it is a boondoggle !!
