Rappin' with Mother Goose at Common Ground

Mother Goose and DJ Diddle entertain kids the hip new way.

Families spread blankets in front of the Common Ground Pavilion and ate pizza to watch Mother Goose get funky with DJ Diddle by updating old nursery rhythms with a fresh new beat.

Mother Goose took the stage in her frumpy dress and shawl. As she sang her first song a heckler started yelling from the back of the audience, "Your show is boring."  Everyone turned around to see who was interrupting. It was DJ Diddle.

He came on stage to help Mother Goose kick it up a notch by rappin' her nursery rhythms. The crowd clapped and snapped to the beat of the songs. Mother Goose got her groove on and traded her old look for a new one – black sweat suit, Yankee baseball hat and a huge silver dollar sign necklace.

A group of children got really close to Mother Goose when she read the classic book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and DJ Diddle read another story while Mother Goose acted it out. Then everyone sang to the fast paced version of "B-I-N-G-O".

Next, seven lucky kids were selected from the audience to come on stage and help sing "Old Mac Donald."  They picked what animal noise they wanted to make on Old Mac Donald's farm and were very creative. Besides a dog, horse and cow, there was an eagle making screech noises and a rabbit that went "crunch, crunch" while it eat a carrot.

The hip hop modernized tale of "The Three Little Pigs" was a big hit with the children.  The pigs names were Leroy, Tyrone and Q-Tip and instead house they had an i-Pod, PSP and a laptop.

DJ Diddle reminded Mother Goose how much fun it was to rap the nursery rhythm with a beat, instead of that old boring way she uses to do it.  Between each act they sang the "Mother Goose Rap".

The show, which was presented by Airport Playhouse in Bohemia, ended with Mother Goose and DJ Diddle rappin' and the whole crowd dancing to "Five Little Monkeys" and "I am a Little Tea Pot."

There is only one more Family Friday event left this summer so be sure not miss it on Friday at the Common Ground.
