Oysterman's Welcomes Medium Robert Hansen

The psychic dinner attracts a full house.

Robert Hansen, a psychic medium, drew a crowd of more than 65 people, as guests packed the back room of Oysterman's Pub in Sayville recently in hopes of reconnecting with their loved ones on the other side.

Hansen, who stars in a new television show called "Paranormal Court" on The Learning Channel, gave guests a bit of background information about himself before he began the readings.

Originally from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Hansen now lives in Merrick.  In his mid-60s, Hansen did not realize he has this "gift" until he was in his late 40s. He worked as a special education teacher for 30 years, teaching at the Helen Keller Center. Hansen comes from an Irish Catholic family. His dad, now 90 years old, is a former New York City narcotics detective. Law enforcement has always been a major part of his family, with uncles, cousins and other family working in the field. Hansen's mom is a genius, quite literally, as she is a member of MENSA with an IQ of 161. Hansen's brother, the normal one, he joked, is a doctor.

The father of four children, including an autistic child, Hansen is also a Seventh Degree Black Belt in Ju Jitsu and is a member of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He has been studied by quite a few universities for his "unique gift," including Harvard University, which concluded he has a definite "shift in consciousness." He has also worked with the police department on missing children and murder investigations.

"What I do is very personal and delicate; talking about loved ones that you have lost," he told the audience. "I don't do shows and I don't perform. There are no smoke and mirrors here. I don't have a telephone that is 'connecting' me to the other side. My readings are going to get really personal, really quick. I want you to be skeptical of me."

He had four rules to follow throughout the evening: 1. Pay attention to who is talking. 2. Listen carefully to what they are saying. 3. Be honest. 4. Know the difference between a message versus a validation.  Messages are for the living.

For the next hour and a half, Hansen connected with deceased relatives of those sitting before him. His style is very similar to John Edward, in that he sees or hears a particular message and is drawn to that person. Once the energy is established, Hansen gave very specific information to those lucky enough to be chosen for a reading. Names, causes of death, dates, nicknames and more helped many to "reconnect" with their loved ones.

Hansen offers both group (limited to 25 people) and private or family readings at his studio in Merrick. He also appears at special events throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties for dinners and readings. Hansen also offers workshops where guests can learn how to broaden and discover their own psychic powers, reconnect with their spiritual journey, or embark on the joy and passion of meditation.
