Art and History Come to Life at Meadow Croft

Inspired by the beauty of the Roosevelt Estate, artists render paintings al fresco.

The Meadow Croft estate provided a scenic backdrop for local artists to create and display their work on July 11. Presented by the Bayport Heritage Association, Suffolk County Department of Parks and the National League of American Pen Women, the former Roosevelt summer home drew in local painters and enthusiasts.

Built in 1891, the sprawling Colonial Revival has served as a great muse for generations. Both John Ellis Roosevelt (cousin to President Theodore Roosevelt) and his daughter, Jean, enjoyed painting as a favorite pastime. Often they invited other artists to Meadow Croft to absorb the atmosphere and hone their craft. A century later, the estate continues to inspire creativity. With easels scattered along the wrap-around porch, and beneath the shade of old trees, artists practiced painting en plein aire – a French term for painting outdoors with natural light.

Working in oils, Joan Sicignano said the constant flow of people actually helped her focus. "Anything goes," she said, while dabbing her brush on the canvas. "When you go from outside to inside, you see so many differences in the piece." A technique she uses to help capture the light is to snap photographs and make quick sketches before she paints. "Then, if I don't finish here, I can take it home to work on it."

"The south shore is getting very artsy," commented Ruth Johnson, who was painting with watercolor. As one of the more recent members of the League, she expressed her gratitude for having the ability to create with such amazing group of people. The organization meets once a month and finds local venues to highlight their work.

All of the artists presented are members of the National League of American Pen Women, which has been culling talented writers, composers and artists since 1897. Jeanne Rogers, President of the Suffolk chapter, explained some of the prerequisites for joining. Among other criteria, one must have won awards, sold work and have been selected for judged shows. Esteemed member of the League, Eleanor Roosevelt, was a dynamic writer herself.

Inspiration came from not only the impressive architecture and vivid colors of the herb garden; it came from the artists themselves. Reading from her book of poetry, Defying Darkness an Odyssey of Personal Courage, Charlotte Caprino shared her continuing struggle with Parkinson's Disease. In a long black and white dress, complete with pearls and a brimmed hat, the 78-year-old author emulated the era of the estate. "You make your life what you want it to be," she said.

The charm of Meadow Croft encourages people to appreciate local history. Frequent visitor to the estate, resident Jack Als suggested, "If you're so inclined, pack a picnic lunch, walk the trails and just enjoy the natural beauty of this place."

"There are so many art exhibits, but this setting really enriches the experience," noted artist and historian Joan Lengyel. Her penchant for old theaters is evident in her drawings, which were displayed on the porch.

Many visitors participated in the house tour after engaging the artists. The journey through time begins in a room decorated with a large black and white photo depicting John Ellis Roosevelt in his elder years, at an easel, with brush in hand.

Guided tours of the museum are held from 1  and 3 p.m. every Sunday though the last Sunday in October for a minimal fee. For more information contact (631) 472-4625.
