16 Shopping Days Left: Give a Gift That No One Else Can Have

Artwork is one of the best gifts for the holiday as it's one of a kind and supporting local artists makes it a double gift opportunity.

If you haven't discovered the perfect gift yet Patch wants to make sure you do and will be spotlighting ideas at local businesses every day until Dec. 25 between Blue Point and West Sayville.

Today Patch spotlights a BAFFA art show that offers a terrific opportunity to buy something original and support local artists at the same time.

The Plein Air Limner Society is holding its third annual art show at the BAFFA Gallery in the Gillette House on Gillette Avenue in Sayville this weekend, hours Saturday and Sunday are 12 noon to 4 p.m. with an artist reception taking place on Sunday.

The group of local artists travel weekly to different, scenic and historic locations on Long Island to paint 'en Plein Air' which means outdoors. They capture the beauty of local barns, waterviews, boats, buildings and changing seasons. The art show includes work done in 25 gorgeous locations.

The artwork is for sale as are prints, unique notecards and even cute bird house creations.

Check out the group's website for more information about the organization.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
