What's Happening at the Libraries: Reading Dog, Gleek Extravaganza

Sayville-Bayport Patch keeps residents in the loop on local library news and events the week of Jan. 9.

There are events and activities scheduled nearly every day at Bayport-Blue Point and Sayville libraries; kids, teens, adults and families can participate in a variety of fun workshops for a small fee. Have fun reading with Chelsea the Reading Dog at this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Chelsea is registered through the Delta Society and is now eligible to serve as a Reading Dog. Readers first through fifth grade can sign up for 30-minute sessions.

hosts an Evening Book Discussion this evening, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Book: "They Cage the Animals at Night" by Jennings Michael Burch. All are welcome.

Sayville library board meets this evening at 7 p.m. as well.

Crisis counselors from FEMA will be at B-BP Library on Jan. 10 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. to offer information and assistance to anyone who was affected by Hurricane Irene.

Participate in a reading competition against other Suffolk County Libraries. Read a group of books and show off your knowledge as part of the Sayville Library team. Books will be announced and handed out at the first meeting. Second meeting is Jan. 11.

The game Go is a game of skill involving no elements of chance. Each participant seeks to control and capture more territory than the other. Whether you’re a master or a beginner, head to B-BP Library for the afternoon Jan. 11 at 4 p.m. There will also be Chess for both beginners and masters. No registration necessary.

Do you love to read and love to share what you’ve read with others? Then this is the program for you! Pizza and drinks will be served at B-BP Library Jan. 13 at 4 p.m.

Calling all GLEEKS! Come dressed as your favorite Glee character and watch the Glee Concert complete with slushies. A Glee Third Reunion Extravaganza is happening Jan. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Sayville Library.

Winter Family Classic Movie Series shows at Sayville Library Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.

Hogwart’s Night Owl School Jan. 14, 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Wouldn’t you like to spend a day in Harry Potter’s shoes? Well put your Wizarding robes on and hop onto the Hogwarts Express! You will be sorted into your houses and given your class schedule. Then you will go from class to class including Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts and much more. You may even see some unusual animals in the Care of Magical Creature’s class! Quidditch will be played and you will be searching all over the library for your very own dragon egg. Don’t forget to study for your O.W.L’s! Finally when the day is done you will sit down in the Great Hall to have a traditional Hogwarts Feast. Very limited openings. 

Bryant Park Quartet performs at B-BP Library Jan. 15 from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. The quartet, comprised of Anna Elashvili and Ben Russell, violins; Nathan Schram, viola, and Tomoko Fujita, cello, is a 2010 Hugo Kauder International Music Competition prizewinner.
