What's Happening at the Libraries: Job Fair, Career Seminar

Sayville-Bayport Patch keeps residents in the loop on local library news and events the week of Jan. 24.

There are events and activities scheduled nearly every day at Bayport-Blue Point and Sayville libraries; kids, teens, adults and families can participate in a variety of fun workshops for a small fee. Sayville Library is hosting a Job Fair Jan. 24 from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

There's Video Gaming Free Play at B-BP Library Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. Come in and spend the evening with your friends playing your favorite games. No registration necessary. Library supplies refreshments.

Advanced Battle of the Books for grades 9 and up is held weekly on Wednesdays (Jan. 25) at Sayville Library. Participate in a reading competition against other Suffolk County Libraries: Read a group of books and show off your knowledge as part of the Sayville Library team. Books will be announced and handed out at the first meeting.

The marshlands of Long Island’s south shore are dotted with a historic collection of unique, bay houses that generations of baymen have used as base camps for clamming, fishing and hunting. Learn about these "shacks," or living artifacts, which are enduring reminders of the region’s maritime history at Sayville Library Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. Author of On the Bay: Bay Houses and Maritime Culture on Long Island’s Marshlands Nancy Solomon will describe the traditions of those who first built the modest houses, including the historic and contemporary photographs by noted photographer Martha Cooper.

Teens ages 14 and up, join others at the Sayville Library Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. for Older Teen Movie Night, an evening filled with pizza, fun and a movie. You must be 14 or older to attend this movie.

On Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. head to Sayville Library for Thanks For the Pink Slip: The Upside to Being Downsized, Fired, Let Go, Laid Off. This seminar prepares you for success even if you have lost your job. Topics covered include understanding the nature of being passionate about what you know and what you do, brainstorming, mind mapping, goal charting, and developing your passion into a money-making venture, whether that be as a business owner or an employed person.

B-BP's Young Adult January movie, showing Jan. 27 at 6 p.m, is Mr. Poppers Penguins – PG. The library will supply the popcorn and drink. No registration necessary.
