What's Happening at the Libraries: Bedbugs and Bullying

Sayville-Bayport Patch keeps residents in the loop on local library news and events the week of Jan. 16.

There are events and activities scheduled nearly every day at Bayport-Blue Point and Sayville libraries; kids, teens, adults and families can participate in a variety of fun workshops for a small fee. Both libraries will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 16 and will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The Cubby Corner (Children's Book Club) is a place for children to come and enjoy stories. This event is virtual but parents can check out some of the January books selections from Bayport-Blue Point Library. Books include: Where the Wild Things Are; Loud Emily; The Fairy-Tale Detectives (The Sisters Grimm #10, and King Matt the First.

Children 18 months through 5-years, can create a circus-related craft to take home at “A Time for Kids” Jan. 17, 10 a.m.-11 a.m. at .

Have you ever witnessed someone being bullied or been bullied yourself? Join others at the Bayport-Blue Point Library this evening at 7 p.m. to discuss and explore different types of bullying, how to prevent it, and how to get through it by playing games and roleplaying at .

Participate in a reading competition against other Suffolk County Libraries: Read a group of books and show off your knowledge as part of the Sayville Library team at Advanced Battle of the Books. Next meeting: Jan. 18, 4 p.m.

Learn about Simple Happiness: Eight Characteristics of Happy People Jan. 18 at Sayville Library, 7 p.m. This empowering, uplifting talk discusses eight characteristics of happy people. It begins with Intention and ends with Compassion. 

Local author Cheryl Dunbar Kahlke will share some of the personal recollections of those in her book, Reminiscing About Ocean Beach and Fire Island Jan. 19 at 7 p.m., B-BP Library. All took place during winters on Fire Island, in a bygone era and way of life, from the 1920s to the early 1940s.

Bedbugs can be difficult to remove and cause many sleepless nights.
What do they look like? Can they spread disease? How can I prevent them? Get answers from a certified entomologist from Suburban Exterminating on preventing, identifying, and treating bedbugs Jan. 19, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Sayville Library- Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite: Advice from an Entomologist.

Learn American Sign Language (ASL) the fun and easy way. Take the Sign Language for Beginners class at Sayville Library Jan. 20, 7 p.m.-8 p.m. This class will introduce you to sign language by incorporating practice situations and conversations with classmates.

Join Sayville Library's new Young Adult Craft Club. At January’s meeting you’ll be creating beautiful snowflakes to hang around your home Jan. 21, 2 p.m.
