The Week Ahead: Blue Point Oyster Talk, Bayport Civic & BOE Meetings

Tons of library programs, community events this week.

There is no excuse for you or the kids not to do something fun away from the school and work week.

Here's  a rundown of all the great programs and events taking place this week between Blue Point and West Sayville.

Monday, Sept. 16

Monday Film Series

The Proposal

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen
Plot: A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada.

The Rise and Fall of the Blue Point Oyster
Bayport-Blue Point Library
7 p.m.
During the 1900s, Blue Point became famous for their oysters.
During this talk, Jeffrey Kassner will explain how the Great South Bay came to be one of the most important oyster producing areas on the east coast during the late 19th Century, and the role it played in "oyster mania" in the United States. Mr. Kassner will look at the importance of the oyster to the south shore of Long Island and explore the factors that reduced the supply and demand for oysters. Please call the library at 631-363-6133 for more information.

Facebook for Beginners

Are you interested in social networking, but don't know where to begin? Are you curious about Facebook and wonder why it's so popular? This workshop will introduce you to the basics of social networking, get you into Facebook for some hands-on learning and generate plenty of discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of this phenomenally popular website.

Beginning Tai Chi
Bayport-Blue Point Library
11:15 .m. to 12:15 a.m. (program runs Mondays through October 28).
This course teaches the 24 movements of the Beijing Tai Chi form. Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing and soft-soled shoes for all Tai Chi classes. Fee: $10 payable by check only.

Elder Law and Estate Planning

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and get down to work! Maureen will provide some basic principles of feng shui and how it can be applied to your unique home! Each participant will review their floor plan for energy flow and balance of yin and yang energy. In addition, each participant will receive a copy of the Feng Shui Bagua Map and learn how to apply it to their home! Bring a copy of your floor plan (you can draw one up simply before you arrive).
