Sayville Business Seeks Donations, Volunteers to Help Local Family

Main Street shop is looking for immediate help for Sayville family who lost their home to a fire after Hurricane Sandy.

The Seafarer Gift Shop at 28 South Main Street in Sayville is looking for volunteers and donations today to help a Sayville family who lost their house to a fire after the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.

"If you are free today (now is good!) I've spearheaded a food and clothing drive for hurricane victims," said Barbara Whitbread, store owner, in an email this morning sent about 8:30 a.m.

"I have cleared the tables of merchandise and have a growing pile of food and clothing donations that need to be sorted. I need volunteers as fast as possible."

Clothing items are needed for displaced family members:

Boy:  Kindergarten - probably around size 5 or small, maybe size 13 or 1 shoe Boy:  2nd Grade - size 7 or medium, probably size 2 - 2.5 shoe
Ladies:  Size 4
Mens:  Size XL

Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
