Residents Try Their Luck at Blue Point FD Event

The department held a "Night of Luck" on the eve of the Bayport-Blue Point St. Patrick's Day Parade.

An annual tradition occurring the night before the St. Patrick's Day Parade, this year's "Night of Luck" at the  comprises one part of the department's yearly series of games of chance.

James Sanderlin, Chairman of the the department's Games of Chance committee, said that the proceeds from the event funnel back to the community.

"It takes care of things like the funds for families at Christmastime, scholarship awards for students and the Easter egg hunt," he said.

Sanderlin noted that the department used to do a corned beef and cabbage luncheon during the parade, but switched it to "Games of Chance" in 2007 to better help out the community.

"It's a great way to ease into the festivities of the parade. Everybody comes out and has a good time," said Captain Jim Schmidt.

Nearly 100 people attended the fourth annual "Night of Luck," helping to raise more than $600.
