No. 89 - Flying in Bayport

The Bayport Aerodrome is home to antique airplanes- take advantage of all the facility has to offer.

We know Bayport-Blue Point residents may think they know everything that's going on in the area, but there are events, programs and places that even a lifelong resident may not be aware of.  Bayport-Blue Point Patch wants to highlight all that's fun, interesting and new in B-BP so residents can take advantage of the opportunities for entertainment our community offers. Every week, we'll post something to try in the area, eventually counting down to #1.

In Bayport, if the conditions are right, you can hear and see small planes overhead.  Did you know that these planes are taking off and landing at a runway in Bayport?  And did you know that the aerodrome is open to the public for tours?

The aerodrome's hours are on Sundays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. You can tour the hangers, planes and living museum. Arrangements can also be made to go to the Bayport Aerodrome at other times or visit with your scout or school group.

The 59-acre air field opened in 1945, known then as Davis Field. has managed the Islip Town-owned aerodrome since 1972.

The only public airport with a grass runway on Long Island, the aerodrome boasts 2,740-foot runway, though it's not open to commercial traffic.  The Bayport Aerodrome became listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The purpose of The Bayport Aerodrome Society is to preserve aviation history. Most of the planes that fly out of the aerodrome are antique aircraft - some even with open cockpits from World War II. The pilots of the aerodrome always welcome visitors and love to share stories and history.

If you're lucky enough you might just get an aerial tour of Bayport.

Plane or not - anyone can join or volunteer with The Bayport Aerodrome Society.  Contact any board members for more information.

The entrance to the Aerodrome is on Vitamin Drive in Bayport and the mailing address is P.O. Box 728, Bayport, NY  11705.
