Community Corner

No. 85 - The Cooking Freak

Take a cooking lesson in Bayport.

We know Bayport-Blue Point residents may think they know everything that's going on in the area, but there are events, programs and places that even a lifelong resident may not be aware of.  Bayport-Blue Point Patch wants to highlight all that's fun, interesting and new in B-BP so residents can take advantage of the opportunities for entertainment our community offers. Every week, we'll post something to try in the area, eventually counting down to #1.

Apples tarts, fish tacos and gingersnaps.  These are just a few of the scrumptious foods and tasty desserts that you can learn how to make with Cooking Freak in Bayport. The Cooking Freak is Carol Moore and her studio is located in a converted garage at her home on Oakwood Avenue.

Moore grew up baking as a teen. Though she took classes and studied the hundreds of cookbooks in her home, she is mostly self- taught. She started Cooking Freak in 2008 after retiring from a career as an English teacher.  With her teaching skills and passion for cooking, the class is a perfect fit for Moore and her students.

Classes with Cooking Freak are very hands on. Every student gets their own personal workspace with all the tools and ingredients to create what is on the menu.

“The goal is to get everyone learning as much as they can through actually doing,” Moore said.

Even though it is a class, it is more of a social gathering.

“There is an exchange of talking about the recipe, ingredients, different techniques and questions," she said. "It is social because students and I are a community all learning about cooking.  We all learn from each other – it is wonderful.”

At the end of the class the students and Moore sample their culinary creations.  “We sit down and actually enjoy.”

Moore welcomes students at any level. “You will learn something and pick up tips that you did not know before,” she said.

Cooking Freak’s fall class schedule just came out and below are the first two classes. Classes usually cost $75 each, which includes a 2 ½ hour lesson with everything you need to complete all the recipes.  Moore also accommodates larger work groups, birthday parties (adult and kids) scout troops and mom & me cookie classes.

To become a Cooking Freak e-mail or call Moore to reserve a spot in one of her classes.  She accepts cash, checks and will soon have PayPal on her website.  There is also a Cooking Freak Facebook page and blog where Moore recently chronicled her month-long trip to culinary hot spots in California.
