A Patchogue man whose boat was stuck on a sandbar on the ocean side of the Old Inlet breach on Fire Island was rescued by Suffolk County Marine Bureau Thursday morning, Suffolk County Police said.

Police responded to a 911 call from the boater around 12:45 a.m. Police say the operator of the boat became disoriented in heavy fog, and that his 19-foot Carolina Skiff boat with a 50 horsepower outboard engine was taken out into the ocean through the inlet.

The boater, Luigi Moscardino, 48, was reportedly operating his vessel without any working navigation lights, said police.

Police began a search and located Moscardino nearly two-hours later around 2:30 a.m. He was located by Marine Mike and taken aboard by Marine Bureau Officers Charles Abbene, Steven Tarolli, Edward Bodenmiller, Raymond Cairo and James Blydenburgh.

Moscardino's boat was towed and secured in Bellport Marina.

Police say that Moscardino was uninjured, and that he was issued summonses for equipment violations on his vessel.
