New Executive Director Named at LIMM

Stephen M. Jones takes the helm at the Long Island Maritime Museum.

Chairman Mike Eagan, on behalf of the museum’s Board of Trustees, recently announced the immediate appointment of Stephen M. Jones as director of the Long Island Maritime Museum.

"His career in public service, commitment to environmental issues and long-time support of the Museum combine to make him the clear choice to carry forward the Museum's educational mission," said Eagan, himself a former Chairman of the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Formerly planning commissioner in the Town of Islip, director of planning and development for the New York Institute of Technology, Suffolk County Planning Director and CEO of the Suffolk County Water Authority, Jones had also served on the Museum's board for eight years.

As director, he will be responsible for all activities at LIMM, including its successful partnership with Suffolk County. His experience as president of the Suffolk County Historical Society will aid immeasurably in collaborating with the County on the restoration and maintenance of the Museum's historic buildings, grounds and vessels.

"The Museum occupies a unique cultural niche on the East Coast, with multiple buildings and vessels on the National Register of Historic Places. Very often the success of institutions is dependent upon a few individuals who have the vision to see unique solutions, promote support and challenge others to join them in reaching these goals," Eagan said. "We look forward to Mr. Jones leading the Long Island Maritime Museum to new levels of activity and public interest."
