Meadowcroft: A Christmas From 100 Years Ago

Local florists, organizations decorate and show off the house circa 1910.

The Bayport Heritage Association sponsored the Christmas at , the former estate of John E. Roosevelt on Middle Road in Sayville. This year's event, which took place on Dec. 4 and 5, was themed "Christmas in 1910" and celebrated the 100-plus years of the estate.

John Roosevelt commissioned the estate in 1891 and the Christmas displays in each room illustrated life during this era. Local businesses and organizations donated their time and talents to decorating each room in the classic Victorian and Edwardian styles. Each room featured its own unique setting of greenery, wreaths, poinsettia, floral arrangements and decorations. "With this year's theme, we are going back to the Meadowcroft of 1910, restoring it back to its heyday," said Gene Horton, chairperson and local historian. Suffolk County acquired the property in the 1970s and the house is open for tours on Sundays from June through October.

The front porch was decorated by the Bayport Flower House, with a wreath hanging on the door courtesy of Le Soir. Bayport Flower House was also responsible the decor in the foyer.

The parlor room featured the Roosevelt's original grand piano, which was returned to the home after it was turned over to Suffolk County. Volunteers were invited to come in and play the piano for an hour each during the two-day event. Lea Rose Interior Design decorated the parlor room.

The dining room was elegantly set with greenery on each chair, thanks to Daisy Garden. In the kitchen, there was a Nutcracker theme decorated and designed by the Neighbors & Gardeners of Bayport-Blue Point. The Bayport-Blue Point Homemakers took care of staging the laundry room, while the decked out the servant's dining room with a beautiful seashell theme.
