Local Kids Craft Cranes to Benefit Children of Japan
Bayport-Blue Point Library holds 'Cranes for Kids' program.
The communities of Bayport and Blue Point came together at the to help the victims of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami by crafting cranes.
Over four hours, they made 890 paper origami cranes that will be donated to Osh Kosh B’Gosh’s Cranes for Kids program. For every paper crane Osh Kosh B’Gosh receives by the end of April, they will donate one piece of clothing to the children of Japan.
Anne Soper runs the origami program at the library. She heard about Cranes for Kids and thought it was a wonderful idea.

“It is turning out to be a great community program," Firestone said.
The community room of the library was filled with tables of origami making adults and children. Each table had an origami leader that was showing the others how to fold the paper into a crane.
Soper said, “It’s so nice that the people who learned how to make the cranes are now showing the others how to do it. Kids are teaching other kids.”
Blue Point Junior Troop 80 was at the library with about 15 Girls Scouts. Co-leader, Teresa Lovito said her girls were at the library for several hours. “It’s a great cause. We are going to make a whole bunch.”
