Library Set to Launch Sayville Reads Campaign

Monthly planning meeting also talks about next year's initiatives.

The Sayville Public Library held their monthly planning meeting this week and officially announced the launch of their new library card campaign. Sayville Reads is designed to spark residents and young adults to sign up for their library card. The board also looked ahead to new technology for next year, particularly the RFID machines that would allow for self-checkout.

Alice Lepore, library director, showed the board members the two new videos which will appear on the library's homepage touting the library card campaign. The first featured , superintendent of schools, expressing all the benefits of the library. The next video was done by a library staffer with a superhero called Mr. Amazing, who appeared throughout the library in his caped ensemble amazed at all its offerings.

Installation of RFID self-checkout machines is something the library is looking to do in the near future. Although just in the early stages of planning, the library is turning to other districts to see how the operation is working. Middle Country Library is one such example. "It gives people their privacy and independence, and it is a definite advantage for library staffers who no longer have to do that repetitive scanning motion," Lepore said. "It's a win-win situation."

In other business, the newsletter is currently being printed and will be in homes before the holidays. It includes information on the Sayville Reads program as well as the art show collaboration with the school district. Lepore told the board about adjustments being made to the visitor counter by the front doors to get a more accurate reading.

Bids have been submitted for the sound control issues in the building which include the installation of grill boots and fabric panels as well as the possibility of additional work if those measures are unsuccessful. The board approved the motion for the low bidder on the quotes to move forward.
