Island Hills Chorus Shows Off Their Perfect Harmony

Sayville Public Library hosts women's barbershop style choir.

The Island Hills Chorus concert drew quite the crowd to the Sayville Public Library recently. The chorus consists of nearly 40 women, ranging in age from 20 to 87 in this chapter. Billed as "real women, real harmony, real fun," the group performed in a four-part harmony barbershop style.

The Island Hills Chorus is a part of Sweet Adeline's International, an active organization of about 30,000 women worldwide. Sweet Adeline's is the sister organization and female counterpart of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Island Hills Chorus is based in Huntington and they perform all over Long Island. Their membership is also spread all over Long Island from Valley Stream to Wading River and in between. They also compete regionally and recently placed fourth and won most improved chorus.

The chorus' director spoke in between songs about how the barbershop style works. The chorus demonstrated the different parts and how they sound separately from the lead melody to the bass to the baritone and harmony.
