Healing With Faith and Energy, Part I: The Wonder of Reiki

Patch's Natural Healing columnist discusses Reiki, the system of healing using spiritual energy.

The "Laying on of Hands" is a basic tenet of many religions in the Western World.  Many Christian Churches have healing prayer sessions or services where physical contact and gentle touch are employed to bring cure for disease.

Priests of the Catholic Church perform "Healing Masses" to comfort and cure the sick, and it is also true in other cultures and faiths, worldwide. The "Curandero" is an integral part of life in many Latin American and Carribean countries where this healer not only employs native herbal medicines, but the "laying on of hands" and prayer. In many Italian villages, people would go to the local "Strega" a kind of good healing witch, for herbal cures and prayer.

There is even a delicious herbal liqueur named after these healers, a favorite in many an Italian household. Chinese medicine is talked about all the time, there is even a fine school of Oriental Medicine in Manhattan, but we seem to know very little about the Japanese healing arts, one of which is Reiki.

In the early part of the last century, a good Japanese doctor, Mikao Usui,  began to believe that healing was much more than medicating his patients.  He believed they responded to a spiritual component along with traditional medicine. He developed a system of healing using spiritual energy and named it Reiki.  Rei for the "Wisdom of God" and Ki for "life force energy.  You may also know it by the Chinese form, "chi."  So Reiki is a divinely guided life force energy available to all. Reiki is easy to learn and doesn't depend on your level of education, I.Q. or medical expertise.  Reiki is a technique of  'life force energy" that is unlimited and eternal.  It is passed on to the student through the Reiki Master during a session called an "Attunement," then allowing that person to pass on this gift of healing and calming energy.

Reiki is not a religion or a church, but it does come from God and therefore practitioners and receivers both may find that they are becoming more spiritually aware and attuned to the comforts and principles of their own faiths. There are a series of hand placements in Reiki, which are believed to directly channel or deliver this healing force of energy directly to the receiver. The troublesome areas are gently bombarded with direct contact and concentration of the practioner.  The person receiving this treatment often reports a real change in energy levels and relief of their pain.  I find I am always filled with a deep peacefulness after receiving Reiki.

Reiki is also beneficial for animals and my wonderful Veterinarian, Dr. Dennis Dougherty of Bayport Village Animal Health Center, has performed Reiki on many of my pets.  I can tell you, my late Parson Russell Terrier, Jesse,  alias  "The Hellion," was always serene after a session with Dr. "D" and for those of you who are owned by "Jacks" you know what an accomplishment that is.

Dr. "D" has a true gift in this regard. Dr. Usui founded Reiki on five principles of the  admirable Meiji Emperor of Japan to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki.  Far from being a mere spa treatment, Reiki is a guide to living a more spiritually fulfilled  life. Reiki has produced remarkable results in the treatment and amelioration of pain, with many devotees reporting miraculous relief from sometimes life long discomfort.  In order for optimal results to be obtained, the client /receiver must take responsibility for healing and actively participate in this healing.  There must also be an active commitment to self improvement for the system to be complete.

Reiki is truly an interactive system of mind, body and spirit. Dr. Usui's Five Principles are also a guide to a just and ethical daily life, as he wrote almost one hundred years ago: "Just for today, do not worry. Just for today, do not anger. Honor your parents, teachers, and elders. Earn your living honestly. Show gratitude for everything."

I think we can agree that this is a pretty good way to live each day.

Cherry Plum:  Dr Bach developed this remedy  for the person who thinks they may be "losing it."  If one is suffering from long periods of despair, anxiety or suicidal thoughts, or has the impulse to harm another, this was his remedy of choice. It is also beneficial when these thoughts are of a sudden nature, it is a component of the Rescue Remedy.

Chestnut Bud:  If you keep repeating the same mistakes, Chestnut Bud might help you.  It is for those who don't learn from the lessons life sends them.  It helps such people to better observe these life lessons and say "farewell" to repeated mistakes.
